The Day I Learned a Lesson About Fear

The Day I Learned a Lesson About Fear

When I was a kid, I once skipped school, thinking I could outsmart the system. My brother Mahmud and I decided to sneak off to a nearby field to play. It felt like the perfect escape – a day of freedom, laughter, and mischief. We were lost in our little world, chasing after each other and forgetting all about school.

Suddenly, I spotted a woman in the distance, her long hijab flowing gracefully as she walked. From her height to her posture, she looked exactly like my mother. My heart dropped, and panic set in. I scanned the field, searching for a hiding spot, but there was nowhere to run. With no options left, I decided to face her head-on.

I rushed toward her, stammering as I explained why I wasn’t in school. I blurted out every excuse I could think of, weaving unnecessary and often incoherent stories to justify my actions. She stood silently, her face hidden behind a veil, listening intently without interrupting. When I finally ran out of words, she reached up, removed her veil, and smiled. “I am not your mother,” she said, her voice filled with amusement.

I stood there dumbfounded, my face burning with embarrassment. I couldn’t even muster a response; I just turned around and walked away. From that day forward, I developed an irrational fear of veiled women, convinced that every one of them could somehow reveal my secrets. It’s a memory that still makes me laugh and cringe at the same time!
